Prepare for Natural Disasters


Natural disasters can happen.

Hurricanes are scary and they are the last thing that people want to worry about. It is a force of nature that no technology can stop when it is bound to happen. You may have only seen its aftermath in the news, and so you think you must be lucky that it did not happen where you are located. But, the fact that you have seen its devastating power in the neighboring city or state, means that it can also happen to where you are located.

What is a hurricane?

Hurricanes, technically is a cyclone in which there are extreme sustained winds of at LEAST 74 mph. The sustained wind speed is measured in a scale of 1 to 5, with 3, 4 and 5 considered a major hurricane.

During a major hurricane, wind speeds can be anywhere between 111 mph to 157 mph, or higher. 

This is where major damages to property can occur from removal of roof decking to total failure.

Take note, a category 1 hurricane will also produce some damage. Terrifying?

You can minimize, if not avoid, damage

There are things that you can do to minimize the effects of a hurricane to you, your family or your property. The hurricane season usually runs from June to November, but it is never too early to do the following:
  1. Plan evacuation routes or locations. Include your pets in your plans!
  2. Stay vigilant. Get educated on the warning signs to watch out for.
  3. Educate your household on evacuation plans, warning signs and what to do at the start of a hurricane.
  4. Keep emergency numbers handy. Red Cross can help you locates shelter in times of disaster.
  5. Be prepared. Plan what to bring, have an evacuation kit, etc.
  6. Review your insurance policy. Being hit by a hurricane might not be the worst thing to happen, not being insured for one is.
Hurricanes, or other natural disasters, are uncontrollable acts of nature that are unstoppable but you can think ahead and prepare.

There are things you can do to minimize, if not avoid, the damage when a storm or any calamity hits your city. While safety is your number one, making sure you have the right insurance coverage is ours.
